Vehicle coverage

Electronics and sensors

Screens, control modules and driver-assist sensors are costly to replace on newer vehicles. How a contract is written matters here more than anywhere else.

What this covers on many plans

  • Infotainment and navigation screens, on plans that list them
  • Driver-assist sensors and cameras, on plans that list them
  • Instrument cluster
  • Control modules, on higher levels

Named-component versus exclusionary

A named-component contract covers only the electronics on its list, so a part that is missing from the list is not covered. An exclusionary contract covers electronics unless they are excluded. Ask to see the list in either case.

Often not covered

  • Cracked screens and physical damage
  • Software updates and reprogramming not tied to a covered failure
  • Aftermarket audio and accessories
  • Calibration after collision repairs

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Are sensors, cameras and the instrument cluster named?
  • Are modules covered, and which ones?
  • Is calibration after a covered repair included?

Coverage depends on the plan you choose. The covered list, exclusions, limits and service fee in your contract decide what is paid. Ask for them in writing before you buy.
