Home coverage
Plumbing
Plumbing coverage applies to the pipes and parts inside the home that fail from wear. It generally does not pay for the water damage that results, which is an insurance question.
What this covers on many plans
- Leaks in supply and drain lines
- Stoppages in drain lines
- Faucet, valve and toilet mechanism repairs
- Garbage disposal, on some plans
What usually causes these failures
- Corrosion and age
- Hard water and mineral buildup
- Tree roots and buildup in drain lines
- Freezing
Often not covered
- Water damage to the home or its contents
- Leaks under or inside a concrete slab on many plans
- Sewer or water lines outside the foundation on many plans
- Opening and restoring walls or floors to reach a leak, or a limit on those costs
- Fixtures such as tubs, sinks and shower enclosures on many plans
- Freeze damage, depending on the contract
- Problems that existed before coverage began
Questions to ask before you buy
- Is access to the failure, such as opening a wall, covered or capped?
- Are sewer and main water lines covered?
- Are slab leaks covered?
If you have a leak
Shut off the water supply first, then call the plan. If water is damaging the home, contact your homeowners insurer too.
Coverage depends on the plan you choose. The covered list, exclusions, limits and service fee in your contract decide what is paid. Ask for them in writing before you buy.
